Fun Days Doubles II Results

Despite a little wind and a little rain, 14 disc golfers participated in the 2nd Annual Fun Days Doubles. The team of Nick Grummer and Andy Sheeler shot a 50 for first place in this year's tournament. Second place was Thomas Mulford and Jeremy Janssen with a 52. Jerad Johnson and Aaron Raney took home third place after winning a one-hole playoff against Jason Dokken and Robert W. Along with his third place finish, Jared Johnson also took home a 2004 Innova Super Roc (donated by Rusty's) for his drive on Hole #8 that ended up 15'5" away from the pin.

Franklin Co. Spring League - May 16

Four golfers showed up for the finale of the Franklin Co. Spring League. After getting a late start due to baseball practice running long, Jared, Joe, Miah and Rob played two rounds on the 9-hole Firebird DGC. I think everyone had more beers than they did birdies but isn't that what the last night of league is all about? Thank you to everyone that participated in the Franklin Co. Spring League and stay tuned for future events in the Franklin Co. area.

Franklin Co. Spring League - May 9

Another great night for disc golf. Four golfers showed up for the second night of Franklin Co. Spring League in Coulter. The big news at league was Rob Peil shooting a record-breaking 21 (-6) on the 9-hole Firebird Disc Golf Course. Rob said the key to his round was his Pro Classic Roc which he threw on 90% of his shots. He birdied holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 with pars on the other three. The previous course record of -5 was held by Rusty Murl, owner of Rusty's in Mason City's Southbridge Mall.

Join us next Tuesday (May 16) in Coulter for the last night of the Franklin Co. Spring League.

Franklin Co. Spring League - May 2

The weather was perfect for disc golf, 65 degrees with a 10mph breeze from the south-southeast. Rob Peil successfully defended his home course as the Franklin Co. Spring League moved to Coulter. Rob shot a -3 on the first round and a -2 on the second round. Unfortunately he was also the only one to show up. So much for moving the start time from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm to accommodate more players. Hopefully we can get more than one person to show up next week, May 9 at 7:00 pm in Coulter.

Franklin Co. Spring League - April 25

Despite cooler temperatures we had our best turnout yet for the Franklin Co. Spring League. Eight golfers showed up for the last night of league in Hampton. Beyer, Janssen, Jared, Joe, Dallas, Melissa, Rob and Jeff all played one round from the regular tees and a second round on the safari course from last week. Afterwards it was suggested that we move the start time from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm so that hopefully more people are able to make it. The Franklin Co. Spring League moves to Coulter next week and will start at 7:00 pm. See you there.

Franklin Co. Spring League - April 18

Winds around 20mph again kept most inside, while three golfers battled the winds and water of the Hampton Rotary DGC on league night. Hampton local Chad Beyer suggested we play some safari golf with a course layout that he had come up with. The course was very well layed out and added considerable length to the regular course. We played the new 9-hole layout as a par 36. The Beyer Course was a blast to play. Hopefully we can get a better turnout next week and play it one more time before leaving Hampton and heading to Coulter for the month of April.

Despite over 20mph winds and the threat of rain all day, four individuals showed up for the first day of the Franklin Co. Spring League. We played 2 rounds of 9-holes and then discussed ways to improve turnout for next week. We hope to see more of you next week.

The Franklin Co. Spring League is fast approaching. League will being in about two weeks at the Hampton Rotary 4-Way Test DGC in Hampton. League information will be send to local newspapers and radio stations and flyers will be posted at all Franklin Co. disc golf courses.

Also in the news, the Firebird DGC in Coulter has put the basket for Hole #1 back up this week. The city removes the basket during the winter months for snow removal. The basket will remain up until the first snowfall.

Fred Flicks an Ace

During a casual round on Saturday, March 11, 2006, Fred Leonard Elling aced the 189ft. Hole #5 at the Firebird Disc Golf Course in Coulter. Fred was throwing a 171g Discraft Z Flick. The improbable ace, which ricocheted off a tree, skipped off the ground and into the basket, was witnessed by five of his fellow disc golfers. Nice shot, Fred.

Franklin Co. Spring League

Franklin Co. Disc Golf is hosting a spring disc golf league starting Tuesday, April 11, and continuing through Tuesday, May 16. We will play the Hampton Rotary 4-Way Test DGC in Hampton during April and move to the Firebird DGC in Coulter for May. Play will begin at 6:00 pm during April and 7:00 pm during May on Tuesdays and formats may vary between singles and random draw doubles depending on turnout. There is no cost to participate in league. Everyone is encouraged to come out and meet fellow disc golfers from the area.

Coulter Removes Basket for Winter

During the winter months, the basket for Hole #1 will be removed in order for the City of Coulter to pile snow in the City Park. The rest of the course is still playable. We recommend that you take a par on #1 and enjoy the rest of the holes. I will be sure to post when the basket is put back up which will be sometime in early spring. Thanks for your cooperation.

Coulter Sees 4 Aces in September

The month of September has been a lucky one out on the Firebird DGC with a string of four aces by three different golfers and one lucky golfer getting two on the same hole.

The first ace came on the September 1 when Rob Peil aced the 182ft. Hole #2 with a 170g Buzzz-D. The only witness was his almost 2-year old son Evan.

The next ace came the very next day when Rob's brother, Jeff Peil of Ames, aced the 161ft. Hole #1 with a max weight Champion Beast. Witnesses to the ace were: Rob Peil and DC Olson (a neighbor of the course.)

Rob's second ace of September was on September 11, once again on Hole #2, this time with a 176g Champion Coyote. Jared, Joe, and DC Olson witnessed this ace.

Local golfer Joe Clark also aced Hole #1 in the month of September, his coming on September 13. Joe was throwing a 171g Champion Viking and was witnessed by Jared.

Fun Day Doubles Results

On Saturday, June 25, disc golfers from all over Iowa and one from Minnesota came to the Firebird Disc Golf Course in Coulter for the course's grand opening and first ever tournament. The four inches of rain that fell on the city the night before may have cancelled many of the city's other Fun Day activities but the throwers were not going to let it stop them from having a good time even if it meant throwing from knee-deep water on some of the holes. 22 disc golfers total showed up to play in this year's doubles tournament, which was a best shot, match play format. Rusty's from Indianola and Mason City was on hand selling discs and beverages as well as Andrew and Dan Lovegren from Belmond selling fundraising discs for the Belmond Disc Golf Course. Teams winning both their matches and walking away with $10 each were: Marc and Craig McClanahan from Ames and Jeremy Weeks from Cherokee and Michael Jordal from Austin, Minnesota. Their was a $19 ace fund which nobody hit during the tournament so we decided to have a closest to the pin throw for half the money, which was won by Dale Jordal of Forest City. In the end $98 was paid out with $31 being taken in to spend on prizes for next year's tournament. Thanks to everyone who participated and all the sponsors who made the course possible. New Signs for Firebird DGC

All the tee signs, waste baskets and the welcome sign are now installed at the Firebird DGC in the Coulter City Park.

The welcome sign was made possible by the generous donations from the following businesses and organizations: First National Bank of Hampton, Kinney-Lindstrum Foundation, Inc., First Citizens National Bank, Coulter Disc Golf Association, the City of Coulter, Concrete Inc., Kramer Ace Hardware, Franklin County Lumber, and Frank's Trading Post.

Tee signs and waste baskets are now present on every hole. Each hole is sponsored by two businesses or organizations. Thank you to all who contributed.

Random Draw Doubles Disc Golf Tournament
Date: Saturday, June 25, 2005 (Coulter Fun Day)
Registration: 12:30-1:30 pm in the shelter house (limited entry)
Times: 1:30 pm - draw for teams, 1:45 pm - players meeting,
2:00 pm - shotgun start
Location: Firebird Disc Golf Course, Coulter City Park, Coulter, Iowa
Fee: $5.00 - 80% payout ($1.00 optional ace fund)
Format: 2 teams will compete against each other in a match play format meaning the team that wins the most holes wins the match. Each match will be 9-holes and each team will play 2 matches. This will be in a best shot format.

Firebird Disc Golf Course Grand Opening
At 1:45 pm there will be a short grand opening ceremony for the Firebird Disc Golf Course, Franklin County's first course and Iowa's 99th, thanking everyone that made the course possible.

Fly Mart
We will also have a fly mart before and after the tournament. Players are encouraged to bring their new and used plastic to buy, sell, and trade with other players. We are also planning on having vendors there with discs as well.

Coulter Fun Day
June 25th is Coulter's Annual Fun Day celebration and besides the disc golf tournament the day will be filled with other activities including: garage sales, a parade, meals, live music, a street dance, beer garden, fireworks and more... Always a good time.

The local radio station, 104.9 KLMJ, will be broadcasting live from the tournament.

County soon to get first disc golf course

A new sports venue is coming to Franklin County, and already businesses and individuals are lining up to help defray the costs.

Work has already begun on the new disc golf course in Coulter's city park. The project came about through the efforts of the Coulter Park and Rec Committee: Rob Peil, Dallas Paris and Cindy Peil; who also make up the Coulter Disc Golf Association (CDGA).

Disc golf is similar to regular golf, except that golfers use Frisbees, instead of a golf ball and golf clubs. Disc golf courses have nine holes, complete with tee boxes, fairways and greens. Instead of a cup, disc golfers try to get their Frisbee in to a chain basket.

Disc golf has been rapidly growing in popularity in recent years, and already some sporting good stores are carrying golf discs. And just like in traditional golf, disc golfers can select from a variety of drivers, fairway woods and irons, wedges and putters - all discs, of course.

Coulter's disc golf course got its start as the result of a pair of $1,000 grants, one from First National Bank of Hampton, and one from the Kinney-Lindstrum Foundation, Inc. Concrete, Inc., of Hampton, donated $100 in concrete for the course's teepads, and Franklin County Lumber, in Hampton, donated nine bags of Sac-Crete for the basket foundations.

All labor to build the course is being donated by the three members of the Coulter Disc Golf Association. In addition, Frankl Lawson, of Coulter, has dug sod for the teepads with his skid loader, and he has provided cement tools and other tools for the group to use. Kerry Etzel, of Coulter, helped pour the cement and loaned his cement tools to the project.

Disc golfer Ryan Gordon, of Finchford, helped the group finish digging the teepad holes so the forms could be put in. He also helped design the course, which will wind its way around the city park and the baseball field.

The city of Coulter also played a major role in the development of Franklin County's first disc golf course. The city donated the land for course, which was already developed and very nicely suited to a disc golf course.

"The Coulter City Council members, Mayor Jim Warwick, and City Clerk Leona Meyer have been a great support and a wonderful team to work with on this project," said Cindy Peil. "We are hoping to get our baskets in yet this fall. Nine Discraft Chain Star baskets will be added if the weather cooperates. In the spring, we will add our tee signs and our welcome board."

The Coulter Disc Golf Course is already taking shape. Last week, concrete was poured for the teepads. The CDGA plans to have the course open for use next spring, and is already planning the first disc golf tournament for the weekend of Coulter Fun Day.

Peil said the disc golf course should dovetail nicely with other projects already in the works in the Coulter area.

"We are hoping with the walking trail being developed, this recreational area will be a popular attraction for all ages," she said. "It will also be a wonderful addition to our annual Coulter Fun Day Celebration.
